U.S. Pulls Iranian Fan Tickets Days Before 2026 World Cup Kickoff
In a strongly worded statement, the FFIRI said, "With less than three days remaining until the start of the 2026 World Cup... the United States has once again acted to obstruct the presence of Iranian supporters at the stadiums hosting the national team's three group stage matches."
The federation added that the move had blindsided thousands of fans who had already committed time and resources to attending: "This is despite the fact that many Iranian football fans, relying on the officially announced process, had already made the necessary plans to attend the matches."
A Direct Breach of FIFA Allocation Rules
Under FIFA regulations, every participating football federation is entitled to receive eight percent of the total ticket pool allocated for its team's group stage matches. The FFIRI characterized the U.S. decision as a violation of the foundational principles of international sport, describing it as "contrary to the spirit governing international competitions and the principle of equality among participating countries."
The federation went further, urging football's global governing body to intervene, calling on FIFA to "uphold the principles of neutrality, fairness, and established regulations."
Iran's World Cup Schedule and Mounting Obstacles
Iran is set to open its World Cup campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15, before returning to the same venue to face Belgium on June 21. The team's final group stage match is scheduled against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
The ticket dispute is only the most recent flashpoint in a fraught buildup for the Iranian squad. Amid ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, the team was compelled to relocate its training base from Tucson, Arizona to the Mexican city of Tijuana on short notice. Iranian officials have also disclosed that the squad must travel to and from all matches on U.S. soil within the same day, and that U.S. visas have reportedly been denied to individuals the federation described as "integral" members of its technical staff.
Somali Referee Also Barred From Entry
The controversy surrounding Iran comes just one day after a separate but related incident drew international attention. A Somali referee — one of 52 match officials formally appointed by FIFA for the tournament — was reportedly denied entry into the United States and turned back to Istanbul, raising broader questions about access and fairness at a World Cup hosted on American soil.
